Money

  • Golden Aral, from the god name Arral. Used for high finance and by the rich.
  • The Silver Tiny comes from a different mint and is used to pay salaries. The rich kept the exchange in their favor, so the Tiny was worth less and less.

Trade and Commerce

  • Bank tricks: Bankers perform the same exchange in two different places at the same time to guarantee a profit even if one currency changes.

History and Origins

  • Historical Background:
    • In the past there was conflict between emperor and church
    • After many conflicts there was the agreement to keep everyone happy
    • The Banker Renaissance was another period in which a banking family gained too much power. To resolve it, they were forced to take vows.
    • Many cities of Algeron still have a great deal of independence, and the Kleg is trying to prevent too much corruption.
    • Algeron was under Movern for a long time
  • Legal Code: The Four Names, created at the start of Algeron by King Daer Voltan, taken from The Keeper's Omnium:
    • 0: concerns the constitution, and it is a forbidden book, written in an old language and translation is forbidden
    • I: Concerns the organization and structure of the legal system. Discusses procedural law for cases against the person and cases against the state.
    • II: Focuses on family law, including marriage and divorce and inheritance
    • III: Deals with property.
    • IV: Covers criminal law.
    • Laws are from the Elected King. Communal cities can create their own laws and even avoid being levied if they have enough power, usually paying something in exchange.
    • War between cities is forbidden, but only in theory.
  • Judicial Branch:
    • Nobles are judged by their peers. The Elected King and the Church can override any rule.
    • Citizens are judged by the court. The Elected King might override the rule.

Military

  • Branches: The Bracks.
    • Only the Bracks army may remain near the capital.
    • The Brack line cannot rule anymore.
    • A long time ago, there was a blood pact: when the King died, the eldest Brack died as well. It was abolished only in theory.
    • The Bracks were former kings, but they were tyrannical and fought too many wars.
    • The Bracks were formerly Achanites and were forcefully converted to the Four Sires.
    • The Bracks own a castle near the city that is used for training.

Religion

Government Structure

  • Branches of Government:
    • The Elected King has authority over religion, the army and levies, and justice.
    • Churchmen may generate money on behalf of the Elected King. New taxes on nobles must be sanctified by the church. The deposition of nobles must be sanctified by the church. Churchmen cannot own land, but each land requires a Churchman Emissary.
    • The Voices are an institution that accepts only the best. They are both secular and religious, with members placed in different positions to keep things balanced. There may be up to 100 Voices: the current Elected King appoints three, while the others come from elsewhere. The Voices elect their three main members. They cannot be removed except for high treason. The Voices cannot own land, but the Elected King may send them anywhere. The Voices convey the will of the Elected King and serve as his emissaries, with authority over dukes and nobles when required.
    • The Kleg is an anonymous institution that acts as secret police. To maintain balance, some Voices belong to the Kleg.
    • The administration manages the city and is responsible for defending its territory.
  • Elections: The electorate (three nobles, three churchmen, and three Voices) chooses the Elected King. The Voices elect their three main members.
